CRANBOURNE Cup Day kicked off Peter McGovern’s Spring Racing Carnival with a bang.
The Cranbourne resident tipped eight out of 10 winners at the Cranbourne Cup in the last eight races of the day.
Mr McGovern said that he generally follows Radio Sport 927 Tipster Deane Lester’s tips on big race days and did so for the Cranbourne Cup.
Friends and family of Mr McGovern soon noticed his continuous luck and followed his bets for the remainder of the day.
“The boys were very happy at the end of the day, all of them went home with a pocket full of cash,” Mr McGovern said.
He said he has always enjoyed a flutter on the horses but maintained that it was important to never bet beyond one’s means.
While Mr McGovern said that he very rarely goes to the races anymore but always makes a day out of the Cranbourne Cup, as he is a member of the Cranbourne Racing Club.
“I used to go every Saturday, but these days I’d rather go to the TAB, you used to get into the races for free but now you have to spend $50 before you even get in the door,” Mr McGovern said.
Mr McGovern said that the Cranbourne Cup was the best day at the races he had had in a long time.
“I haven’t had a lucky day like that for a long time,” Mr McGovern said.
Although Mr McGovern believes that Cranbourne Cup Day just a lucky day, it seems that his luck has continued, with another win over the weekend.
He also recalled a win in the early 1970s when he tipped every winner at Caulfield.
“Those days were different, we would bet $1 and come home with $45 dollars and think it was fantastic,” Mr McGovern said.
With his recent and pass success the Cranbourne Star asked Mr McGovern for his insider tips for the remaining races at the Spring Racing Carnival.
Derby Day: “You can’t go wrong with Lee Freedman’s horses Stockade and Husonic.”
Melbourne Cup: “After its fantastic Caulfield Cup run Master O’Reilly will be a favorite. I think it’s an outstanding young horse that looks like he’ll run the distance easily.”
