CONSTRUCTION is well under way at Casey’s $37 million Cranbourne Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
Earthworks have now been completed at the water-smart pool with 30,000 tonnes of soil excavated and 10,000 tonnes of fill imported and compacted to form the sub-base of the building and the pools.
Casey mayor Colin Butler said he was delighted that the key subcontracts including civil contractor, pool contractor, structural steel and concreting had been awarded.
The work is due to be completed by the end of 2009 on schedule.
Work on the water smart part of the project, which involves the collection of rainwater from the Casey Indoor Leisure Complex roofs, will also be undertaken over the next two months.
“The use of collected rainwater, bore water and recycling water for the centre’s facilities will eliminate the need for the use of potable mains water, saving approximately 26 million litres of drinking water a year,” Cr Butler said.
The rainwater stored in the two million-litre tank will be filtered and disinfected for use in ‘topping up’ the pools, cleaning ‘back wash’ pool filters, toilet flushing, showers and landscape watering.
