Career pathways on show

By BRIDGET COOK

STUDENTS across the region got to try out more than 40 different career options at the South East Try a Trade and Careers Expo last month.
The event gave more than 2000 students from schools and education providers the chance to meet local employers and training providers, explore new career options and see interactive displays under one roof at the Cranbourne Racecourse.
Try a Trade is an initiative of the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN), supported by the City of Casey to showcase the wide range of training and employment options in the region.
SELLEN workplace learning program coordinator Mandy Stevens said the day was a huge success.
“We had representatives from a range of industries including automotive, carpentry, hospitality, engineering, sport and recreation and farming and agriculture,” she said.
“The idea is to give kids a taster before they choose what course or pathway they want to go down.
“It’s an interactive day – that’s what makes it different from a lot of other trades expos.
“It’s also different as it only promotes what’s on offer in our region and promotes all our local providers.”
