LOCAL jockey Brian Higgins backed himself a winning filly for life at Cranbourne’s Friday night racing meeting last week.
In a romantic gesture that would put most men to shame, the Berwick resident proposed to his girlfriend of three years Sheree Vizjak in a fitting way.
Mr Higgins bought the naming rights to race two at Cranbourne – naming it the Sheree, Will You Marry Me? Maiden Plate.
And lucky for him he knew the answer to that question before the race was run as he also booked out a function room at the racetrack and had all their family and friends in attendance for an engagement party.
Luckily, she said yes.
Ms Vizjak said it was amazing and she was speechless about the whole thing.
“He definitely put a few men to shame,” she said.
“Not only had he popped the question, but also put on the engagement party.
“I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”
Ms Vizjak said she works for Browns Sawdust and Shavings and was told by them that she was there to make a presentation on their behalf.
“I walked around the corner and there were about 100 people standing in the mounting yard holding a ‘Will you marry me Sheree’ sign,” she said.
“I was so overwhelmed and speechless.”
Mr Higgins said he purchased the naming rights to the race in January at a charity golf event, so the plan had been in the pipeline for quite some time.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” he said.
“It turned out to be a little more than I imagined it to be, but it all came off well.”
