STUDENTS at Cranbourne South Primary School are leading the way in getting fit and healthy after school.
Grades five and six students organised a whole school sports afternoon last Thursday to encourage kids to get off the couch, out of the house and get active.
‘Aim for the game, Get out, Be active’ was the motto as children played cricket, football, soccer, frisbee, hula hoops, sack races, beanbags, obstacle courses and a 100-metre dash.
Senior school teacher Kate Couacaud said the event was part of the school’s Go For Your Life program and was totally run by the senior students, who put up posters, called the media, set up the activities and organised the younger kids.
Ms Couacaud said the whole idea was that when kids went home after school they switched off the television and took up some sort of sporting activity.
She said the culture now was very different from a generation ago when kids were always outdoors, as many parents felt the need to keep their children inside to keep them safe.
“We just want to encourage them to be more active,” Ms Couacaud said.
She said the children really enjoyed the day and were presented with participation certificates made by the senior students, and the younger kids had already asked if they could run the event again.
