HUNDREDS turned up to the opening of the new shopping centre in Lynbrook on the weekend.
There was plenty of excitement as crowds cheered on the colourful street parade at the new Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre on Saturday and relished a free barbecue breakfast and entertainment.
About 100 students from Lynbrook Primary School joined leading Melbourne group Batacuda and The Community Drummers to head the Grand Street Parade.
Coles Group chief executive John Fletcher and VicUrban chief executive Pru Sanderson made speeches and Casey Council mayor Colin Butler officially declared the centre open.
Holt MP Anthony Byrne joined Lynbrook Primary School captains Thilini Ranasinghe and Jaysen Valdes to cut the ribbon.
Entertainment included local acts, community groups and professional performers, while more than 40 residents and 30 community groups and organisations helped out throughout the opening weekend.
Cr Butler said he was impressed with the design of the village and said it would be an important service for residents.
“I think it will be a very successful venture,” he said.
The shopping centre comprises a Coles supermarket, Liquorland and about 28 specialty stores for the 22,000 residents in the surrounding housing estates.
The centre is on the corner of the South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard.
