Wigging out for a friend

By Sarah Schwager
A CLOSE friend’s diagnosis with cancer has spurred a Cranbourne woman to shave her head.
Sharon Barac will go under the clippers tomorrow night at a fundraiser at Kids Space Indoor Play Centre in Hallam to raise money for Julie Vugs and her family.
Julie was admitted to The Alfred Hospital after she was diagnosed with cancer six weeks ago, and she has been there since.
Mrs Barac said Julie and her family had just moved to Nyora from Cranbourne last year, and the costs of petrol and parking in the city were becoming a burden.
She said Julie’s husband had had to stop work to look after their children, Kimberley, 7, and Beau, 4.
“This has totally and utterly turned their lives upside down,” Mrs Barac said.
“The kids don’t want to leave her when they visit. They are really struggling.”
Mrs Barac said if the community could help pull together, it would make the Vugs family’s life just that little bit easier in what was a very tough time.
Mrs Barac will also sell her hair, which is halfway down her back, to a wigmaker to add to the fundraising efforts, but also to help out another cancer patient.
The wig will be made especially for a cancer patient.
“If I can make some money so the kids can go and spend time with her, my hair is a small price to pay,” Mrs Barac said.
She encouraged people to come along to the fundraiser at Kids Space, which has donated space, complete with fun slides, an activity wall, and baby crawl area, and staff to help with the cause.
The event runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm and costs $15 per family to enter.
It is located at 79 Star Crescent, Hallam.
People can also donate for the next month at Paul Saddler Swimland in Narre Warren, Nyora Primary School, or the Beach House Gym in Cranbourne, which will also hold a gold coin open day on 5 June.
For more information, call Sharon Barac on 0418 591 903.
