A Cranbourne North secondary college will receive a $1 million funding boost in the 2020/21 Victorian Budget.
Alkira Secondary College will use the huge sum of money to build a cover, lights and upgraded scoreboard for the school’s outdoor hard courts.
The funding was announced by Education Minister James Merlino and Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards on 21 November, who said the school community had done “an incredible job” in supporting students throughout the disrupted year.
“Families in Cranbourne North have done a phenomenal job in supporting student to learn from home,” Ms Richards said.
“As kids return to their classrooms, we want to make Alkira Secondary College better than before.”
Ms Richards added that the funding would contribute to providing a “great education”, it’ll also create new local jobs.
The money comes from a greater $1.18 billion investment, which was announced by the State Government earlier this year as part of the Building Works Package.
That package is set to create space for more than 21,000 extra students in the state’s education system, while also creating around 1,600 local construction jobs.
Across Victoria, the State Government has vowed to deliver 1,460 school upgrades. The upgrades include the building of new classrooms, fixing old buildings and delivering learning spaces.
Mr Merlino said the package would ensure every child had a “great local school”.
“This is an investment in our kids and their future, because every child, no matter where they go to school, deserves access to state-of-the-art facilities,” he said.
“Schools are the heart of our communities, so it makes sense that we’re investing in upgrades to support local jobs to drive our economic recovery.”
