Workers hit gas main

Fire crews were called to Thompsons Road in Cranbourne after receiving reports of a broken gas pipe main on Monday 21 October

Firefighters from Cranbourne, Hallam and Narre Warren attended the leak about 2.30pm which was about 10-15 metres from the road.

Firefighters, who brought the leak under control shortly before 4pm, believed the leak was caused by an excavator hitting a 125-millimetre gas main.

A CFA spokesman said the leak was in a reasonably clear location as firefighters used their gas monitoring equipment to ensure there was no threat to the public.

Thompsons Road had to be shut down with traffic diverted along Williams Thwaites Boulevard.

Gas company workers repaired the gas main by about 7.30pm.

CFA issued a safety alert at the time for Clyde North, Cranbourne East, and Cranbourne North due to the gas leak being hazardous.

Residents were advised to avoid the area between Narre Warren Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road.
