Construction workers hit a gas main while working at a reserve in Pearcedale on Thursday 24 May.

Firefighters from Pearcedale and Somerville fire brigades responded to the incident shortly before 9.27am.

APA Group spokeswoman Cassandra Dunlop said APA Group crews repaired a damaged gas pipeline at the corner of Hatch and Colley Streets.

“The pipeline was damaged during third party construction works. Gas supply has been restored to all affected properties,” she said.

A CFA spokesperson said Hatch Street and Colley Street were closed to the public before the leak was contained about 10.15am.

Pearcedale firefighter Robyn Murphy she believed the workers were attempting to install bollards at the reserve.

“There wasn’t a lot we could do apart from obviously make sure everyone was safe, get the gas turned off in nearby houses,” she said.

CFA issued a safety message for Pearcedale residents for hazardous gas being released from the gas main.
