Needled mum sparks safety recall

Seven-week-old Ninah Brooks wasn't hurt by a broken needle in the stitching of her baby suit.

AFTER a Cranbourne mother found a sewing needle broken off in the stitching of a Bonds baby suit, the Aussie label has announced a safety recall of three different types of garments.
More than 17,300 Bonds baby coveralls, cardigans and dresses have already been sold dating back to December 2013 and a Bonds spokesperson told Star News it may have just been an isolated incident.
“We weren’t aware of the issue until a customer called on Monday 3 August and we have taken voluntarily action to recall the items.
“We want to be extra careful even though the chance of this happening to another item is extremely small,” they said.
Anny Brooks, the mother of seven-week-old baby girl Ninah, said she’d hate to think of the injuries her baby could have sustained if she wasn’t so “pedantic” about checking over her daughter’s clothes.
“I got scratched by something sharp and was so shocked and angry that something like this could have passed quality control and been left in a baby suit,” Ms Brooks said.
Bonds issued the recall this morning, which urged customers to return the products sold at numerous department stores.
“Customers should cease using the product and return the garment to its place of purchase or to Bonds for a full refund of the purchase price,” Bonds published.
Ms Brooks said she hoped nothing like this happened again.
“To think of the pain a poor baby could go through with something so dangerous being left inside a suit makes me feel sick to my stomach,” she said.
A Bonds spokesperson gave assurance that all their clothes were scanned by metal detectors before hitting shop shelves.
“Metal detectors make sure if a needle has broken that all parts of needle are accounted for,” they said.
A shocked Ms Brooks said the needle was still in the suit even after the garment was washed.
“Other parents need to start checking their children’s clothing prior to dressing them just in case,” she said.
