Promotion a real prospect

DOVETON Soccer Club moved back into the promotion race at the half-way mark of the season with a hard fought 2-1 win away at title rivals Beaumaris on Saturday.
On a dry and uneven surface, both teams found it difficult to impose their passing style of play, and it was the harder, hungrier Doves who eventually came away with the points.
Man of the match Daniel Mota put the Doves ahead with a looping header from a Gary Davidson free kick prior to the break, before second half substitute Paul Blake rifled in his first senior goal following Matt Gyarmarti’s long throw.
Beaumaris’s Anthony di Sensi pulled one back for the home side in the 85th minute to set up a frenetic finish, but Doveton held on to move into second place behind league leaders Warragul United.
In form Berwick City set up this week’s big derby clash against the Doves with a 2-0 home victory over Old Scotch. Goals either side of half time from Alpha Turay and Alex Torelli gave City their third-straight win to move them into fifth, just two points behind the promotion places.

Dandenong City was bested 0-2 on Friday night by Richmond SC with goals to Eagles’ pair Hamlet Armenian and Tom Cahill proving the difference in the testing conditions, with 12th placed Dandenong City now facing North Geelong Warriors away on Saturday.
WOMEN’S PREMIER AND STATE LEAGUES
Berwick City held on against North Geelong for most of the match as Tony Rafferty’s charges dealt with injuries piling up including an in-match injury to former Victorian Champions League player Emily Rizkallah. Rafferty had to use some of his reserves players to fill the gaps in the line-up and to their credit the Berwick City attack held strong until 10 minutes left when North Geelong broke through for the match-winner. In a physical, but well-spirited contest, Rafferty rated the games of Kelsey Minton and Elly Priest as their best.
Berwick City sits in eighth place and faces Keilor Park at home on Sunday.
