City drag down favourites

DANDENONG City emerged victorious 2-1 over Sunshine George Cross with both scores coming via Goran Jozeljic.
Sunshine went in overwhelming favourites for the NPL1 clash on Saturday at Frank Holohan Reserve, but it didn’t faze Ivan Duzel’s charges as City slammed on two first-half goals from its tall striker Jozeljic.
The first came in the 16th minute as Jozeljic finished the hard work of the midfielders before banging in his second in the 42nd as he beguiled his marking man and effectively struck the match winner.
A consolation goal from Sunshine’s Delfin Mosibe Esara late in the match made the last 10 minutes interesting, but the Dandenong defence held strong to keep an equaliser away from the net.
City sits seventh in NPL1 and faces Avondale Heights away on Saturday.
STATE LEAGUES
Mornington piled on 6-2 against a lacklustre Casey Comets.
Despite goals from Nicholas Lekakis and Jason Rand, the result was put beyond doubt by the visitors.
Former Doveton SC striker Simon Mur drilled one Mornington before five others dropped to leave the Comets falling from the sky.
Mur’s former team mates at Doveton were outclassed by Warragul United 1-2 and Berwick City similarly fell to Heatherton United 1-0.
WOMEN’S PREMIER/STATE LEAGUES
Casey Comets and Berwick City both notched wins with Shirley Anthony and Natalie Holmes drilling majors for City in its 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers.
The wins put Casey Comets into eighth in the Premier League before its clash with FFV Under 17 Girls at the State Football Centre on Saturday.
Berwick City faces South Yarra away on Sunday.
