CRANBOURNE was well represented in the School Sport Australia 12-and-under Cricket Championships, with all-rounder Nivin Sathyajith part of the victorious Victorian squad.
Nivin, 13, from Cranbourne, played for the School Sport Australia team at the championships, held in Bendigo last week.
Victoria claimed five wins from five matches to clinch the championship and Nivin was thrilled to get the chance to raise the shield.
“It was pretty good, it was the first time I’ve won a national championship and it was fun cause I got to spend time with all my team mates and make new friends so it was a great experience,” Nivin said.
“It was the highest grade of cricket I’ve ever played in and to be a champion in Australia that’s even better.”
While batting opportunities were limited for the all-rounder, Nivin starred in other ways, picking up two wickets against Queensland with his right arm medium-pacers and also snagged a catch and two run outs in that match.
The season has been travelling along nicely for the all-rounder – making runs with both of his teams – Cranbourne in the Dandenong District Cricket Association and Kingston Saints in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, the latter being the club he made his senior debut for earlier in 2013.
The way Nivin has been accumulating awards, his trophy shelf will eventually need to be upgraded – with more than one best and fairest, junior club champion, and awards for batting and bowling averages among his significant collection.
Nivin’s career ambitions are also great as he has a desire to represent the country and the state in cricket.
“My next goal is probably to play Casey-South Melbourne, then from there I want to work my way up to Bushrangers and hopefully Australia,” Nivin said.
Not merely a summer sports specialist, Nivin plays soccer in winter for Casey Comets and the crafty midfielder won the under-13 boys’ best and fairest last year to cap off a great year on the fields.
Nivin wanted to thank his parents for all the help they’ve put into his cricket career so far and helping make it successful.
His next challenge is representing the Southern Pioneers in the Victorian Cricket Championships with the Pioneers facing the South East Sharks at Jubilee Park 2, Frankston.
