Law to stub out smoking

By Bridget Cook
THE City of Casey is proposing a number of changes to the local law to help butt out safety, wellbeing and visual hazards to the community.
Residents are invited to have their say on proposed amendments to the City of Casey Community Local Law 2/2010.
The most significant proposed change is the introduction of smoking restrictions on council land, particularly at children’s playgrounds and reserves.
Under the proposed change, a person would be unable to smoke within 10 metres of a playground, a building on a reserve or the entrance to a building on council land.
Another proposed amendment included the number of unregistered vehicles kept on private property and visible from any adjoining road.
The amendment would mean that a person who owns property of under 1000 square metres would need a council permit to have more than one unregistered vehicle on their property.
Another proposed change is to allow residents 42 days – rather than the current 28 days – to pay a council infringement notice.
City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said through the city’s local laws, the council was able to reduce hazards and promote a community environment which was connected and protected and where residents can enjoy living.
The council has developed an amended local law and a community impact statement to identify and explain the specific changes.
This will assist residents and businesses to understand the potential impacts of the proposed changes.
