They’re 80 up and feeling super

By Emma Sun
FIVE members of the Cranbourne Bowls Club were presented with Super Veteran Badges at their open day held recently.
About 80 people witnessed Dick St. Ruth, Lou Welsh, Des Conroy, Cyril Arlov and Jon Bibby being presented with their badges by Bowls Victoria representative Judith Thorpe for having their 80th birthday this year.
Joe Bruynen was also a recipient, but was absent due to other commitments.
Club secretary Fritz Helle said the presentation ceremony was great fun.
“We talked about their achievements and contributions to the club, when they joined and things like that – that was great,” Mr Helle said.
City of Casey Mayfield Ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon was also a guest at the open day, and said it was a terrific day.
“Members were all dressed in their club colours and eagerly participated in the proceedings, in the Super Veterans event, in the opening of their new bar and then the “first bowl” for the season,” she said.
“This is a great club doing great things for their community.”
The group also had the chance to go out onto the green and play a few friendly games.
“The beautiful weather and friendly atmosphere was encouraging for the club for the new season,” Mr Helle said.
