THE Cranbourne Racing Centre has secured the final funding needed to install lighting at the complex so night racing can go ahead.
The State Government this week announced an additional $2 million in funding for the project.
South Eastern Metropolitan Region Liberal MP Inga Peulich said the extra funding was to fill a black hole left by the previous state government.
“The previous Labor government, in its haste to fund the project, failed to properly scope or cost the project,” Ms Peulich said.
“Labor said the project would cost $4.7 million, well short of the $6.7 million actually required.”
Ms Peulich said the funding would go towards upgrading lighting at the Cranbourne racecourse, allowing the venue to host as many as 15 night race meetings in the upcoming racing season.
“The Cranbourne Turf Club had a vision for night racing as part of its program, and this funding commitment from the Baillieu Government will enable that to happen,” Ms Peulich said.
“Racing at Cranbourne captures an audience from the entire south-east community and is one of Casey’s premier local tourist attractions.
“With Casey Fields only one kilometre away, Cranbourne has now positioned itself to be one of Victoria’s sport and recreation hubs.
“The Coalition Government is committed to maintaining and developing racing as a significant industry in Victoria.”
