Keeping it safe

CASEY police have asked MRA Cranbourne GP Run goers to be mindful of their safety on Saturday.
Casey’s traffic police are gearing up to monitor the crowds at the upcoming wave-off event, with more than 25 officers ready to provide a visible presence on the day to help control the thousands of people who are expected to line the streets of Cranbourne.
Three police motorbikes will lead the journey to Phillip Island and a police car will follow behind.
Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) Sergeant Pat McGavigan said police requested that onlookers stayed behind the barriers during the wave-off on Saturday.
“We ask that people stay behind and don’t have arms and legs hanging over while the riders come past. Some riders are proficient, but not all are. We have not had any incidents and that’s the way we would like to keep it,” Sgt McGavigan said.
He said police would also monitor the traffic returning through Cranbourne on Sunday and asked people kept completely off the road.
“We have noticed in previous years some sit right up near the white line on the side of the road. While it’s nice to get close it can only take a split second for a serious tragedy to occur.”
A number of road closures and traffic conditions will be in place this Saturday for the MRA Cranbourne GP Run.
Casey council has been decided that a similar traffic management scheme to last year will be implemented.
From 8am to 11am the southbound carriageway of High Street, between Stawell Street and Sladen Street, will be closed. Through traffic will continue to operate in both directions on the northbound carriageway.
There will be no access to High Street from Stawell Street, Lyall Street, Bakewell Street, and Childers Street. Southbound traffic should use Clarendon Street to access Centro Cranbourne as right hand turns will not be permitted at Stawell Street or Sladen Street.
Southbound traffic will not be able to make any left-hand or right-hand turns on High Street between Stawell Street and Sladen Street. Southbound traffic on High Street can make left-hand turns into Stawell and Sladen Street only.
Police will control traffic at the intersection at High Street and Stawell Street, and at the intersection of High Street and Sladen Street. Pedestrian crossings will be controlled by the City of Casey with additional traffic controllers on the southbound carriageway to slow motorcyclists.
All traffic changes can be viewed on the City of Casey’s website at www.casey.vic.gov.au/gprun.
