ONE of Australia’s most renowned golfers Peter Thomson celebrated his 80th birthday at Sandhurst Club recently.
During a visit to Sandhurst Club, which features two of the golf courses he designed, Mr Thomson was surprised with an impressive cake featuring a giant golf ball to celebrate his birthday.
Speaking at the occasion, Sandhurst Club chairman Ken Roche paid tribute to Mr Thomson’s major contribution to the development of golf in Australia and the success of the Sandhurst Golf Club.
Melbourne-born Mr Thomson is most famous for five wins in the British Open Championships in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1965. He is the only man to win the tournament for three consecutive years in the 20th century.
