Methane wall completed

WORK is completed on the $11 million deep wall at the Stevensons Road closed landfill in Cranbourne.
The wall, which was built to block further migration of methane gas, is about 830 metres in length and half a metre wide. It varies in depth from 17 metres to 27 metres, and has been built along the landfill’s northern and western boundaries.
Mayor Geoff Ablett said the deep wall took six months to complete and was considered to be the most effective and cost beneficial method of controlling the methane, and complemented the extensive infrastructure that Casey Council had already put in place at the site.
“Up to four specialised drilling rigs with ‘clam shell’ excavation buckets worked on-site six days a week to complete the project,” Cr Ablett said.
