Kids join army

By Kara Irving
STUDENTS at Lyndhurst Secondary College are geared up and ready to go in a bid to raise money for The Salvation Army.
Three senior VCAL classes at the college, with the help of students across all year levels, are pooling ideas on how to give back to the charity which has been a more than generous to thousands of Australians over the years.
With the help of local businesses, students aim to donate a Holden Berlina Commodore and fill the interior and storage compartments with non-perishable food items.
So far the car is being spray-painted with different colours and will later feature the logos of small businesses and sponsors who are working closely with the college.
Students will also raise money through a lunchtime barbecue, teachers having their hair shaved or waxed and even a fairy floss trade-in scheme, which will involve students trading in canned food for a stick of fairy floss. The students will start their fundraising activities at the college this week.
VCAL co-ordinator and Senior Teaching and Learning leader Jeff McMillan believes that the close relationship between small businesses and the college is something to be proud of.
“It’s not every day you see students willing to give up their spare time to help a charity in need,” he said.
“I believe that through students working together, not only with their peers, but with members of their local community, they will achieve something that is truly remarkable.”
