Skids under aquatic centre

LESS than two weeks after opening, part of the $37.9 million Casey RACE is closed for use after reports of slippery surfaces.
The council confirmed on Tuesday that the toddler splash park at Casey RACE was not open for use.
Builders have been requested to undertake additional surfacing on some sections of the aquatic area.
The News understands some users of the aquatic and leisure centre had slipped while using the new facility.
Casey’s director of infrastructure services Ray Butler said an issue arose with the surface of parts of the pool deck.
“Rubber floor mats have been placed out on the pool deck as an interim measure while works are being assessed,” Mr Butler said.
“In addition, the YMCA has implemented a revised aquatic timetable to best accommodate the needs of aquatic users.”
All pools, including the spa and sauna area, are in use.
More than 5000 people raced into the facility in the first week since its official opening on 13 June.
About 4500 people inspected the facility the weekend it opened, with 2500 people enjoying the free family fun day on the Sunday to test out the aquatic and group exercise facilities.
Mayor Geoff Ablett said the official opening was a great success.
“It was very rewarding to see the faces of so many children light up when they saw the splash pool area, including Victoria’s only Space Bowl waterslide,” Cr Ablett said.
Casey RACE is the largest capital works project ever undertaken by the City of Casey.
