ABOUT 2500 workers will be trained for a number of state government water projects at a new training centre at Chisholm Institute of TAFE’s Cranbourne Campus.
Over the next three years in the Water Industry Specialist Training Centre, the workers will be trained in skills ranging from civil construction to water operations, including water testing and water treatment.
Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation Jacinta Allan MP said the centre would link with the water industry to provide specialist training to meet the existing and emerging skills demands of Victoria’s water companies. She also said water industry workers could get subsidised training at the centre. “Under the Brumby Labour Government’s Victorian Training Guarantee, from 1 July the water industry will be able to access government-subsidised training for their eligible workers in the Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses of their choice at the providers of their choice,” Ms Allan said.
“The Water Industry Specialist Training Centre is well positioned to deliver a significant amount of this training.”
Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the centre has already developed close links with water companies as well as the two consortia bidding to manage the Victorian desalination plant at Wonthaggi.
“The Water Industry Specialist Training centre features a 100,000-litre water storage tank which will be used for horticulture purposes before being fed into wetlands where students will carry out tests,” Mr Perera said.
