THE covers are on at Cranbourne Secondary College, but play won’t be delayed.
The students can now run around – rain, hail or shine – after a $180,000 steel roof was built over a double basketball court.
The school paid every cent of the project’s cost, an initiative assistant principal John Jovic said was something to be proud of.
“We usually rely on grants as they arrive but on this occasion it was money the school had raised and saved up over time,” Mr Jovic said.
The decision to build the roof came about because of a strain on the physical education facilities, given the large number of students at the school, now about 1440.
“We have only the one gym on site and it’s caused a lot of pressure on the physical education and sports department, especially in inclement weather,” Mr Jovic said.
“Sometimes we have five of six classes using the gym … we felt as a school it would be good to provide another undercover area.”
Mr Jovic said the steel structure was designed to be closed off if the school decided in the future that it was necessary.
“It’s a solid steel structure that is designed to be there a long time.”
Mr Jovic said the covered basketball courts would be well utilised because there were few facilities the school could access within walking distance.
“I think it will be a really welcome addition to the sports and PE program here. I’m sure it will be a very popular addition to what the kids can do in their free time.”
