Broadband upgrade for Government schools

By Lia Bichel
CRANBOURNE students will benefit from a technological advancement funded by the Brumby Government’s $89.3 million Vic Smart initiative.
The government announced all Victorian Government schools would receive a major broadband upgrade to increase their high-speed broadband capacity from four to 10 megabytes per second.
Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the upgrade puts local schools at the leading edge of the nation’s digital education revolution.
“Victoria is leading the digital education revolution with the best bandwidth infrastructure available anywhere in the nation, putting Cranbourne students ahead of the game,” he said.
Mr Perera said the initiative also demonstrates that the Brumby Government and Telstra are improving the already world-class broadband technology in Victorian government schools, making sure that every child has an opportunity to the best start in life through great education.
“Government students will now be able to access and share information and on-line resources nearly two-and-a-half times faster making communication and knowledge sharing between schools virtually instant,” he said.
The upgrade will begin this month, and is expected to be completed in June 2009.
