STUDENTS at a Hampton Park primary school were singing and cycling last week when Victoria Police visited their school as part of a police fun day.
The day not only featured tunes from the police rock band Code One, but it also taught the students important lessons about protecting their bikes from theft.
The day was organised by Cranbourne Senior Constable Deb Barclay, with students at St Kevin’s Primary School bringing their bikes along for engraving on Wednesday, 12 March.
Sen Const Barclay first met the school’s 670 students when she visited their classrooms to talk about the role Victoria Police plays in the community, as well as their individual rights and responsibilities.
“For some children this might be the first contact they have ever had with police and these visits will enable us to establish a good rapport with young people from an early age,” Sen Const Barclay said.
The Cranbourne Police bike patrol also turned up to talk to children about bicycle safety and students engraving their bikes, especially if they rode to school each day.
Sen Const Barclay said Cranbourne Police recovered an average of 60 bikes each year that could not be returned to their rightful owners because they were not engraved with a serial number.
She encouraged children and parents to contact their local police station about getting their bikes engraved.
“If a stolen bike is recovered and it has a serial number engraved on it we can then return the bike,” Sen Const Barclay said.
“It is really important that people take this step and protect their property.”
A sausage sizzle was also held and Sen Const Barclay thanked local traders for supporting the event through food donations.
