SCHOOL may not usually be cause for celebration, but there was plenty of cheering when Cranbourne Secondary College unofficially opened its new building on Tuesday amid cheers and celebration from the school’s senior students.
The new seniors centre will house the school’s year 12 students from the start of term four, and is the first building for teaching and learning to be completed at the school since it opened 30 years ago.
John Jovic, assistant principal in charge of facilities and of the senior school, said the building was the first stage in a master plan for a range of new works at the school.
The new building includes six general purpose classrooms, an information technology lab and students’ study area and will also house 25 teachers, with kitchen, toilet and locker areas shared between the students and teachers.
“The immediate response from the students was overwhelmingly positive,” Mr Jovic said.
Also on Tuesday, the State Government announced that stage two of the master plan had been approved, and the school could now start drawing up a design with architects.
The next stage will include a new junior school, music centre, home economics, administration area, library and a new canteen.
Mr Jovic said the school was very excited about the announcement, with work likely to begin next July.
“This is one of the most significant announcements at the school in a long time,” he said.
Mr Jovic said the senior school building had been designed in a way that its main objective was to get the staff and students closer together.
“If the students need assistance, the help is right there,” he said.
The junior students will be moved temporarily into an old wing, which will eventually be demolished, while the second stage of building takes place.
