TOORADIN residents sick of travelling more than 10 kilometres to a pharmacy want one opened in their own home-town.
Registered pharmacist and Tooradin local Nancy Green has been leading the push to get a pharmacy operating but has been denied approval by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia.
Many residents from Tooradin and its surrounding areas are supporting Ms Green’s push, along with Federal MP Greg Hunt and state Liberal candidate Neale Burgess.
Currently anyone in need of basic medical advice has to travel to Cranbourne, causing a great deal of inconvenience with limited public transport available.
Flinders MP Greg Hunt is putting pressure on the Pharmacy Guild, the organisation that works in conjunction with the government, to approve Ms Green’s application.
“Tooradin has been without a pharmacy for far too long,” Mr Hunt said.
“Pharmacists provide essentials services to local towns such as Tooradin and town residents will continue to be at a disadvantage while a pharmacy is prevented from operating there,” Mr Hunt said.
Dipak Sanghvi, president of the Pharmacy Guild of Victoria, said anybody can apply to open a pharmacy but several guidelines must be met in order to get approval.
“One of the issues would be that there in no doctor is Tooradin,” Mr Sanghvi said.
Mr Hunt said the benefits of establishing a pharmacy in Tooradin would be enormous for locals.
“It is extremely difficult for families and senior residents to obtain any medical assistance locally,” Mr Hunt said. “A pharmacy in Tooradin would also provide much needed services to the surrounding towns of Dalmore, Cannons Creek, Warneet and Blind Bight.”
