DEVON Meadows Primary School’s rock bands are set for stardom as a pre-tour performance revealed they are a hit.
The school’s two bands Dead End and Early Dismissal gathered a few new fans at a performance at Cranbourne West Primary School recently.
The senior rock band will now head off on tour around East Gippsland, visiting Metung, Nowa Nowa and Lakes Entrance.
Music teacher Phil Wilmoth said the band was made up of eight grade four, five and six students who play rhythm, lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboard and singers.
The junior band has 10 kids in the younger year levels. The school’s third annual tour, this year they have attracted an even bigger crowd, with at least five schools meeting up in Lakes Entrance to hear their last gig.
Mr Wilmoth said instrumental classes were offered from grade three.
“We like to think our program is a little unique as well,” he said.
“We have a bit of a radical approach. It is very hands on. We do a lot of jamming.”
He said students usually spent one or two years in the band before moving on to high school.
“I am always delighted to hear reports back from students who continue on with music,” Mr Wilmoth said.
“Many of them maintain that passion for playing, which is wonderful.”
