CRANBOURNE MP Jude Perera believes local traffic will be safer and more convenient after Minister for Roads and Ports Tim Pallas announced a $30 million project to duplicate Cranbourne-Frankston Road last week.
The duplication will provide two lanes in each direction for the 3.5km between Hall Road and the Western Port Highway and is expected to be completed in early 2010.
A wide median strip will be constructed to cater for future expansion to three lanes in each direction.
Mr Perera said the funding would provide significant benefits for the community.
“The duplication of this vital transport route will provide a huge boost to safety in the area, physically separating oncoming traffic and (providing) a safer right-turning environment, which lessens potential for crashes,” he said.
“In addition to improved safety, the duplication of Cranbourne-Frankston Road means a marked improvement in traffic flow in the area, significantly reducing delays, especially at peak times.”
It is the final stretch of Cranbourne-Frankston Road to be duplicated and will be an extension of the current works being undertaken between Hall Road and Scott Street in Cranbourne.
It will also link to the duplication works between the Western Port Highway and Centre Road, which are scheduled to start in the coming months.
Mr Perera acknowledged the contributions of members of the local freight industry and the City of Casey, which played an important role in the development of this project.
“We have listened to the community and are taking action to improve roads in important parts of Melbourne’s road network,” he said.
The $30 million will also go towards the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Pearcedale Road, the upgrading of the intersection at Brookland Greens Boulevard, and roadside landscaping and improved street lighting.
