THE City of Casey will trial public recycling bins in an effort to help the environment.
Eight bins have already been placed around Doveton’s Myuna Farm.
At last week’s council meeting, council discussed trialing the recycling stations at the wave-off at the MRA Cranbourne GP Run.
But Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said this week that council had not been able to get the bins up in time.
A council report into the bins showed while the community had embraced home recycling, Public Place Recycling (PPR) had been much more difficult to implement.
Recycling bins installed at the Warneet Foreshore were removed some years ago due to high levels of contamination.
Other problems have included economic viability, inadequate signage or education about recycling and inappropriate bin location.
However, a recent survey of Casey residents showed 88 per cent in favour of having recycling bins in public places.
Cr Bradford said the bins were another way council was trying to be environmentally friendly.
But he said council would need to educate people about using the bins before they could be set up in shopping centres.
“In other municipalities people don’t follow the protocols. They don’t segregate the rubbish in the bins. This would defeat the purpose,” he said.
Council decided to first conduct the trials, then look at whether they would be viable in Casey.
