CRANBOURNE veterans were recognised at a special medal presentation on Monday for the sacrifice they had made for their country.
Holt MP Anthony Byrne presented the Australian Defence Medal to local recipients at the Cranbourne RSL.
“It’s appropriate in the lead up to Anzac Day that we recognise the sacrifice and conviction of our defence force personnel,” Mr Byrne said.
He said it was important that members of the Australian Defence Force, past and present, were recognised for their significant commitment and contribution to the nation.
“Members of the defence forces often contribute in unseen and unrecognised ways,” Mr Byrne said.
Eighteen locals were presented with the Australian Defence Medal at the ceremony, hosted by Cranbourne RSL president Barry Jones.
Denny van Maanenberg, from the Casey Regional Veterans Welfare Service, gave an insightful speech on the history and design of the Australian Defence Medal while military member Major Colin O’Dell spoke on the important role of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The Australian Defence Medal is awarded to regular and reserve force members who have completed their initial enlistment period or four years service since World War II.
Any current or former defence force member needing more information on eligibility can contact Anthony Byrne on 9796 7533.
