BOXES of unwanted kittens are being dumped at the RSPCA’s Pearcedale Aid every day, stretching the shelter to capacity.
The annual ‘kitten season’ has seen the shelter bombarded with huge numbers of tiny felines.
Shelter supervisor Carrie Mudge said the branch was receiving boxes, baskets and cages full of kittens and adult cats almost every day.
Ms Mudge said staff were trying frantically to find homes for the 50 kittens and 25 adult cats currently available for adoption.
“It is difficult enough to find homes for all the kittens, but it is particularly hard for the adult cats who have to compete with the young ones for homes at this time of year,” she said.
“It is sad to see that people continue to ignore the need to desex their cats when they are such prolific breeders.”
There is a range of cats and kittens available for adoption, including longhaired and shorthaired and all ages and colours.
All have been desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and wormed and tested for health and temperament.
“Many people don’t realise what fantastic pets cats can be,” Ms Mudge said.
“They are affectionate, have great personalities and make excellent companions.
“They are particularly suitable for working families as they don’t need to be walked and are happy to sleep for hours while their owners are away.”
The cats can be visited at the shelter at Robinsons Road, Pearcedale, between 11am and 4pm seven days a week.
