AT one time barely distinguishable in the playground, kids at Cranbourne South Primary School are now a sea of multiple colours.
The school has strayed from its typical uniform and introduced different colourful school hats this summer.
The school’s Sun Smart policy requires children to wear an appropriate sun-smart hat during the summer terms – terms one and four.
When reviewing the school’s uniform policy last year, staff decided to give students the option of choosing a coloured hat of their choice.
There are eight different colours – black, navy, maroon, orange, pink, red, blue and yellow.
The school also designed a special hat logo which has been embroidered onto the hats.
The most popular colour was pink, with a quarter of students sporting magenta hats, followed by black.
Principal Joseph Kelly said the school had decided to take the children’s views into account when reviewing the uniform policy and hence had come up with the variety of coloured hats.
“The children were very involved in the whole process,” he said.
Mr Kelly said the hats had been enthusiastically accepted by the children.
“They not only provide the appropriate protection from the sun, but also add a little individuality to the school’s uniform and a splash of extra colour to the playground,” he said.
