BIKE riders will be rewarded or penalised in a police operation aimed at encouraging people to wear bicycle helmets.
Cranbourne Police will be out on patrol between 21 and 31 July, targeting people not wearing their helmets in Operation Hardhat.
The operation will focus on reducing the road toll and finding riders not wearing a helmet around school zones or shopping centres in Cranbourne and Hampton Park.
Cyclists not wearing helmets should expect a $52 penalty notice.
However, cyclists doing the right thing will be entered in a competition to win bicycle prizes.
Cranbourne’s youth resource officer, Senior Constable Brett Owen, said the operation centred on warning, education and enforcement.
Sen Const Owen said local primary and secondary schools had been notified and would be raising awareness of safe cycling practices among students.
He said people correctly wearing bike helmets would be rewarded by being entered in a competition with $500 in prizes donated by the City of Casey.
The draw will take place shortly after the completion of the operation and winners will be notified by phone or mail.
