CLUBROOMS at two recreation reserves have been broken into during the weekend, harming the operation of local sports clubs.
Clyde Recreation Reserve was broken into and a stereo system valued at $300, food supplies and alcohol valued at $400 were stolen.
Also, last Friday night the Hampton Park United Soccer Club and Hampton Park Cricket Club were affected after thieves broke into rooms at the K.M. Reedy Reserve.
Police said thieves attempted to remove the till at the soccer club with no luck.
They also tried to break into two fridges, one belonging to the soccer club and the other to the cricket club, but were unsuccessful.
Police said the burglars did, however, cause significant damage to the building.
Richard Howie, Clyde Recreation Reserve committee of management president, said thefts from sports clubs were all too prominent.
“Luckily we’ve been left alone for some time,” Mr Howie said.
“But now we’re going to have to fundraise again.”
Mr Howie said Casey Council covered costs for 90 per cent of the damage to the building but not the items stolen.
That cost must be covered by the individual clubs but Mr Howie said they did not have the funds and resources to raise the money by themselves.
Clubs that use the Clyde Reserve include the cricket club, junior and senior rugby clubs, Green Valley Darts Club and Cranbourne Angling Club.
Mr Howie said previous thefts at the reserve had been similar.
“They’ve targeted the alcohol. They took the stereo and they also raided the fridge,” he said.
“Plus every time they break in they cause significant damage.
“Last time they smashed their way into the wall.”
Some time between last Thursday and last Sunday the burglars broke the back door and ripped off the roller door.
They also broke the locks off the fridges.
“The canteen is the main source of fundraising for these clubs. To lose stock is significant for any of the clubs,” Mr Howie said.
“There are always requirements for gear.
“Now we will have to just replace what was lost. It’s pretty disappointing really.”
