A SCORCHING day signalled the start of the fire season for local Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews who battled a scrub fire in Lynbrook last week.
Blustery conditions and a 35-degree day made the fire near Aylmer Road difficult for firefighters to contain.
Hallam CFA attended the scene, supported by three other crews during the four-hour operation.
CFA duty officer Kerry Phillips said the Hallam unit was called out to 10 fires last Thursday – with the Lynbrook blaze the worst.
“The fire got into some pretty large areas. A few tall trees had to be cut down so we could put them out,” Mr Phillips said.
He also issued a warning to all residents in semi-rural areas to start preparing their house and surrounding land for the fire season.
“It is time for people to start cleaning up around their properties,” he said.
Mr Phillips recommended residents form an evacuation plan in the event of a fire, as well as removing firewood being stored around their house.
“People should also look at mowing the grass around their property, clean their gutters out and make sure their garden hose can reach every section of the house,” he said.
