A LYNBROOK family is lighting up their street for charity.
Vanessa and Scott Watson have decorated their house with thousands of lights as part of a Make-A-Wish Foundation competition.
As the only family in the entire Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Dandenong area to enter the fundraising competition, they are now asking the community to rally behind them.
Mrs Watson said this was the second time they had set up lights on their house and their first time in the Wish Upon A Christmas Light competition.
“We have supported the Make-A-Wish Foundation in other ways in the past. They do such great work,” she said.
“When we saw their Christmas lights competition we quickly got on board.
“We have three children so it’s important for us to give that support.”
The house is decorated with nearly 8000 lights or 170 metres of rope, 60 metres of which is on the roof. Features include a talking Homer Simpson that sings Merry Christmas and is triggered as cars drive by, and a ‘Merry Christmas Lynbrook’ sign on the house.
“It’s certainly not a cheap endeavour,” Mrs Watson said. She said the main desire behind entering the competition was for their three children Hayley, 1, Ryan, 2, and Jack, 9.
“Every night they ask to go out and have a look,” she said. “We’re really doing it for the children as well as for a good cause.”
The Make-A-Wish Foundation makes wishes come true for very sick children.
The Watson’s home is one of 128 entries in the competition and 22 across Victoria.
People who vote for the house could win return airfares to Auckland, New Zealand, for two people with three nights’ accommodation at the Hyatt, valued at $3315.
The house with the highest number of votes in Australia wins $10,000, with six state and territory prizes of $1000 Thrifty-Link vouchers. The house is at 46 Franklin Parade, Lynbrook.
To vote for the Watson’s Christmas lights display SMS your name, postcode and the code 775197 to 1977 6655.
SMS costs $0.55.
