FOUR local police officers will save dollars on hair care over the next few months and at the same time provide the Bluey Day foundation with eight thousand.
Senior constables Matthew Dickie and Brett Owen joined Constable Geoff Howe and Senior Sergeant Gerry Hengel in doing their bit for charity and shaving their heads.
Sen Const Owen, from Cranbourne Police, raised $2500 for the cause after the Berwick Springs Hotel offered to donate the money if he shed his locks.
“It was a good opportunity to raise money for young kids with cancer,” he said.
“I had to get permission from my girlfriend first but she said go for it. I have to admit I miss my hair a bit now.”
Members of the public gathered at the Fountain Gate Good Guys store on Saturday to support their local police officers and provide donations to the cause.
Local firefighters, ambulance officers and SES crews were also on site for the fun-filled day, along with Neighbours star Pippa Black and former St Kilda footballer Aussie Jones.
Members of the police air wing also flew in on the day to lend a hand and show excited children a police helicopter.
Narre Warren Senior Sergeant Gerry Hengel was thrilled with the community response on the day, even though he lost the moustache he had sported for more than 30 years.
“We would like to thank the public for their support and the corporate partners for their sponsorship of the day,” Sen Sgt Hengel said.
He said each officer had hoped to raise $1000 but they were delighted they could exceed this expectation and raise $8000 for children with cancer.
The Bluey Day Foundation raises funds to buy equipment, treatment or support children and families living with cancer and other serious childhood illnesses.
