VOLUNTEERS everywhere were celebrated recently on International Volunteers Day.
Casey volunteers joined councillors to celebrate the day and opened nominations for the 2008 Casey Community Volunteer Awards.
Mayor Janet Halsall and members of the Junior Air League led a gathering of local volunteers in raising the volunteer flag to recognise the contribution of volunteers in the Casey community.
Cr Halsall said she was proud to honour such valuable members of the community and urged fellow residents to further recognise their work by nominating them for a Casey Community Volunteer Award.
“Many wonderful volunteers attended the flag raising, and I was honoured to acknowledge the excellent work they do for the Casey community,” Cr Halsall said. “I invite Casey residents to nominate someone they believe has made a difference so that we can give them the recognition they deserve.”
Categories for the awards include Family and Community Support, Sport and Recreation, Arts and Cultural Activities, Environment and Conservation and Young Volunteer.
To be eligible, nominees must be current or previous volunteers for not-for-profit organisations or groups based in or servicing residents in the City of Casey. Nominees for the Young Volunteer Award must be aged under 25 on 9 May 2008.
Nominations are also open for the Innovation Award, which is presented to a community organisation, group or business that implements projects, programs or partnerships that encourage volunteering and community participation.
