PETER Collins has risked his life for the Cranbourne community for more than 20 years.
The former CFA Captain was recognised for his outstanding service and dedication by Casey mayor Neil Lucas at a special presentation at last week’s Casey Council meeting.
Mr Collins, who is now ranked a first lieutenant after the Cranbourne Brigade became a 24hour manned station in August, said he was honoured to accept the award.
“I am very proud. I don’t do this job to get recognition. I do it to help the community. It’s a career and a lifestyle,” he said.
“However, it is nice when someone recognises your work,” he said.
Mr Collins was captain of the Cranbourne Brigade for five years and was made an honorary life member during that time.
He said that although he was no longer captain, he would continue to serve the Cranbourne community with the same commitment and dedication.
“My role is still basically the same but the legislation doesn’t allow a captain at 24hour manned stations.
“This award goes with my commendation of bravery award and the other service awards I’ve received over the years.
“I can honestly say there are not too many captains in the area that have received the same recognition from council,” he said.
Mayfield Ward councillor Kevin Bradford praised Mr Collins for his hard work within the local community, describing him as a very important and worthwhile participant in the City of Casey.
“He has often gone beyond the role of emergency service worker that is required of him,” Cr Bradford said.
“If there were more residents like him, Casey would be a far better place.”
