A CRANBOURNE newborn has topped the scales at Casey Hospital.
It was a case of no pain, no gain for proud mum Carolyn Rose who gave birth to the hospital’s biggest ever baby at 9.16am on Saturday.
Bulky bub Blake weighed in at a massive 11 pounds and four ounces, or just over five kilograms, after a solid ninehour labour.
Amazingly, Mrs Rose delivered her second child naturally, free of any painrelieving drugs.
“Nobody told me he was going to be that big!” Mrs Rose said of the recordbreaking birth.
“I was shocked. I don’t know why he was so big!
“I definitely won’t be having any more (children) because I’ve heard they get bigger as you go!” she said.
Mrs Rose said Blake was almost double the size of her daughter Tayla, who weighed a mere seven pounds and nine ounces when she was born two years ago.
“I even had an epidural for Tayla and she was nowhere near the size of Blake.
“This time I had nothing. I was absolutely exhausted.
“My husband was delighted. His first thought was Blake would make a great football player,” she said.
Mrs Blake said her sizeable delivery stunned doctors and midwives at the hospital, who rushed to the maternity ward to catch a sneak peek of the star attraction.
“They were amazed at the size of him. I even had the hospital cooks and a maternity class come to have a look!” she said.
Mrs Blake said the only down side to having such a big baby was that she now had to buy Blake a whole new wardrobe.
“All the clothes we had brought for him will have to go back because he’s already straight into 000 clothes and infant nappies.
“But he is a healthy, beautiful baby and we are so proud,” she said.
Casey Hospital Executive Director Peter Faulkner said the hospital was delighted to announce the birth of the largest baby born since the maternity unit opened its doors in March last year.
He said Blake weighed more than the previous largest baby by only a few grams.
