AFL clash to grace Cranbourne ground

THOUSANDS of local footy fans are expected to descend on the Casey Fields complex on Saturday when competitive AFL competition returns to Cranbourne.
After a recent Essendon intra-club match gave fans a sneak peek of the season to come, North Melbourne and Melbourne will clash in NAB AFL Regional Challenge Match at 2pm.
Last year’s Essendon and Hawthorn match attracted a crowd in excess of 10,000 people and organisers are expecting a similar turnout on Saturday.
It will be a bumper day of football, with local VFL side Casey Scorpions set to take on Sandringham immediately after the AFL challenge.
City of Casey mayor Janet Halsall was excited about welcoming the AFL back to the municipality.
“I am thrilled that the Demons and Kangaroos will be gracing Casey Fields,” she said.
“In developing Casey Fields, part of council’s vision was to create opportunities for residents to experience elite sporting events, so I am very proud to say that the AFL is using Casey Fields so that our residents can enjoy a high profile event.”
“As we are expecting a large crowd, I encourage people to arrive early and if possible, car pool to minimise traffic build-up in and around the ground,” Cr Halsall said.
Last year’s match was plagued with traffic gridlock along Berwick-Cranbourne Road, but organisers have promised a more civilised parking system this time around.
Public entry to the NAB Challenge match is $10, current AFL members and members of the Melbourne and North Melbourne football club’s will be admitted free.
