Road upgrade agreed

CASEY Council has relented to requests to help upgrade a road leading to the Cranbourne Racecourse.
Last week the council agreed to fund part of the $230,000 works on Grant Street that provides access to the Cranbourne swimming pool.
At a previous council meeting, councillors decided to fund the first 82 metres of Grant Street, which is council owned.
But at a general purposes committee meeting on 11 July, Ron Mantel, Cranbourne Racing Centre chairman and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management member, made a presentation to councillors requesting further funding.
Mr Mantel said the community had been enjoying access to the reserves, including the football and cricket ovals, and the swimming pool for a long time. He said frequent visitors meant the road now needed urgent upgrading.
At last week’s council meeting, councillors agreed to pay for the first 82 metres of the road’s upgrade as well as half of the cost of the 171 metres up to the southern access into the existing Cranbourne swimming pool.
In its previous report, the council stated that as the new Cranbourne and Aquatic Leisure Centre would be opening in 2008, it would no longer need access to the pool, except for some continuing activities. The road is used to access the racecourse, training complex, tennis courts, football and cricket ovals, Trio’s Tabaret and the swimming pool.
The work is expected to cost a total of $230,000.
