Safe steps to school

CHILDREN across Casey are being urged to watch their step as they walk to school.
Mayor Kevin Bradford said tomorrow’s (Friday) national Walk Safely to School Day was a great opportunity for parents to promote safe pedestrian behaviour to their kids.
Cr Bradford said the Pedestrian Council of Australia initiative was aimed at encouraging primary school students and their parents and carers to leave the car at home and walk.
“Children learn by example so parents are encouraged to always reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour, including crossing roads at traffic lights where accessible or school crossings, walking and not running across roads, holding the hand of an adult, looking left, right and left again and not stepping out between parked vehicles,” he said.
Cr Bradford also reminded motorists to take special care around school zones and school crossings.
“Always slow right down when nearing school zones and if you are dropping or picking up children, park away from the school and walk children to or from the school gate to reduce traffic congestion.
“Many schools in Casey run a fully supervised Walking School Bus Program so contact your school to see if there is one that you can participate in,” he said.
