Plans booked in for library

THE Cranbourne Library will house precious archives under a plan to increase its size and storage areas.
Last week Casey Council decided to look at utilising the part of the Casey Indoor Leisure Complex currently used by the Turning Point Family Church and School when the church moves.
Councillor Colin Butler said all the groups involved, including the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation, Friends of the Cranbourne Library, the Cranbourne Shire Historical Society, William Angliss TAFE and the Cranbourne U3A, were very keen to access the space.
Cr Butler said it would be great to see those groups have a space close to the library and see some of the historical society’s archives come out of storage so everyone could view them.
Mayor Kevin Bradford said the Casey Indoor Leisure Complex was one of the most under-utilised buildings in Casey.
“It’s at the hub of the whole social scene happening around there,” he said.
Councillor Wayne Smith, who is also chairman of the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation, said the priority had to be the future of the library.
“We’ve made some bad decisions in the past. Selling off the two mobile libraries was the worst,” he said.
“The idea of having the historical society and the U3A close to the library is a good idea. They would work well together in the same location.”
Council officers will now prepare a master plan for the building and prepare a report on the cost of any proposed work.
Cr Butler said if planning began at the end of the year when the Turning Point Church left its building, the space could be up in use by mid-next year.
