THE Balla Balla Community Centre is helping to capture the spirit of the Cranbourne township and help celebrate its 150th anniversary.
The community centre is holding a special photography competition and exhibition for the local community to celebrate the township’s milestone occasion.
The centre is seeking photographers to take photos recent photos of Cranbourne to show what it means to them.
There will be a number of prizes available to the winning photographs.
The photos will then be displayed in an exhibition at the centre from 16 September to 30 November, alongside photographs and artefacts of Cranbourne in the past 150 years, contributed by the Cranbourne Historical Society.
Balla Balla Community Centre manager Maree Cullinan said they decided to run it as they wanted to mark the anniversary.
“It’s a significant celebration, and we thought it would be a wonderful way for the community to get on board,” she said. “It encourages people to capture the community through their eyes and capture what they see as the essence.”
Ms Cullinan encouraged photographers, from beginners to advanced, to get involved.
“Look at your community through your camera lens and capture the moment,” she said. “That odd ray of light, a local landmark, breathtaking views, people and cultural diversity as an example.
“Experiment and be artistic, and put yourself in the running for a great prize.”
City of Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon agreed.
“There must be a treasure trove of wonderful old photos of the Cranbourne community and we know that there are sensational current photos,” she said. “I encourage people to get involved and participate in this fantastic initiative in celebrating Cranbourne turning 150 years.”
The competition involves categories for beginners, intermediate and seniors.Entries open 1 August and close 31 August. For entry details or more information visit www.ballaballa.com.au.
