More than 160 people from the Afghan community gathered in Hampton Park to celebrate the Bakhtar Cultural Association’s second anniversary on Friday 7 June.
Attendees enjoyed a night of poetry and live music at the event which aimed to innovate, build and foster an inclusive community and social harmony.
The night also celebrated Mother’s Day, and Eid al-Fitr, a festival which marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan.
Mina Azizi, who is an active board member of the association, was recognised for her dedication to cultural events with an award presented by Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon.
Cr Stapledon also presented flowers and Mother’s Day cards organised by Bakhtar Cultural Association to inspiring mothers in appreciation of their participation in the community.
The Association also recognised local businesses for their contribution towards cultural events.
Ismail Niazi from Hello World Dandenong and Nemat Behiar from Amberlee Receptions were the recipients of an appreciation award.
Chairperson of the Bakhtar Cultural Association, Bassir Qadiri, said the night was hailed a success, which also provided an opportunity for young poets, writers and musicians, and Afghan women to promote their talent in the community.
