Kicking goals for diversity

Sunny weather, free activities and footy featured at the Casey Demons Football Club inaugural community celebration day of the South Asian community.

Families converged on the grounds of Casey Fields on Saturday 4 August for the fun-filled day.

Casey Demons general manager Peter Maynard said it was a great opportunity to connect communities to AFL footy.

“One of the outcomes was trying to promote healthy and active lifestyles in Casey,” he said.

“We want to engage and integrate as many communities as possible.”

More than 50 kids of Indian, Sri Lankan, and Pakistani backgrounds attended the free day.“We’ve had a 30 year partnership with the City Casey and we do a lot of community activities,” Mr Maynard said.

The day included a free bbq, giveaways including t-shirts, footballs and stickers and a chance for youngsters to meet Casey Demons players.

“We also have a multicultural day on the 19 August at Casey fields,” Mr Maynard said.

“We’ve also got a South Easy Juniors (SEJ) day along with the Pink Ribbon Day this Saturday (11 August) promoting out partnership with SEJ and also raising funds for the BCNA.”

Mr Maynard said the community events “really stems from the major partnership between Melbourne Footy Club and City of Casey to promote that healthy active lifestyle.”
