Birthday bash for stroke support group

By Brendan Rees

The Cranbourne Stroke Support Group celebrated its 15th birthday with a party at Amstel Club in Cranbourne.

Fifty attendees including former members and representatives of the Stroke Association of Victoria (SAV), joined current members for finger food, sandwiches, savouries, tea and coffee on Friday, 4 May.

Laurie Meagher, who was the group’s first president and Clare Gray from the SAV cut the birthday cake.

Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera Gillian Simons from the SAV were also among the special guests.

Acting Executive Director of SAV James Garland also celebrated the occasion, delivering an insightful talk on how new stroke hubs were being planned around Victoria.

The group’s secretary Sandy Harris, who has been a member for six years, said the group had grown to 35 members.

“Over this time our group has played a big part in supporting and offering friendship to anyone who has suffered and survived a stroke along with their carers, families and friends,” she said.

Ms Harris said there was seven original members present at the birthday, five of whom who were still active with the group.

“As anyone who has travelled down this road knows that having someone who can understand and share their experiences of being a stroke survivor or carer can make life a little bit easier and this is the reason why our group was formed and is still going today.”

Meetings held the first Friday of the month at the Cranbourne Masonic Lodge Hall, corner of Childers and Codrington Streets. The group also has a social Sunday outing once a month.
